Introduction
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship
Arkansas Oral and Facial Surgery Center (AOFSC) is offering a 12-month internship in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS). AOFSC is a group practice consisting of four oral and maxillofacial surgeons, one oral and maxillofacial pathologist and one physician anesthesiologist. In addition, a large pediatric dental practice and several restorative dentists utilize our facilities on a weekly basis while providing dental care under general anesthesia. We also have close working relationships with our colleagues in otolaryngology and sleep medicine. Over 5000 new patients are seen, evaluated and treated each year for various surgical and dental conditions.
Scope
The program’s intent is to assist and prepare recent dental graduates for the rigors of a future OMS residency. While emphasis will be placed on the clinical practice of OMS, significant exposure to integrative care with associated dental and medical specialist colleagues will be invaluable. Interaction with general practice residents is available and the intern will be encouraged to help mentor pre-dental students. To enhance communication skills with other clinicians and staff, a formal scientific presentation to attending staff will be required prior to the completion of the program. Though not mandatory, there will be opportunities for research with our clinicians and anthropology faculty at the University of Arkansas. The clinical component will consist of the following:

- Management of orofacial infections
- Dental and maxillofacial traumatology
- Orthognathic surgery
- Temporomandibular surgery
- Cosmetic procedures
- Ambulatory OMS
- Hospital based OMS
- Ambulatory anesthesia
- Oral and maxillofacial pathology
- Oral medicine & facial pain
- Otolaryngology rotation
- Non-surgical management of temporomandibular disorders
- Radiographic (CBCT) interpretation
- Pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery
- Pediatric dentistry
- Medically compromised patient care
- Mentally and physically handicapped patient care
- Sleep disorder diagnostics and management
Objectives
Program objectives are intended to prepare the recent graduate with the clinical experience and background to gain acceptance into an OMS residency soon after completion. The curriculum is designed to give one-on-one mentorship to an individual whose academic record shows promise for continuing their career in a surgical discipline.
Criteria for Acceptance
- Completed application
- Two professional references
Criteria to Begin Program (can be completed after acceptance)
- License to practice dentistry in the State of Arkansas
- Current DEA active in the State of Arkansas
- Professional liability insurance for 12 months
